1. I can't come to an Open House. How can I see the school?
Please call to arrange a personal tour; we're happy to do that!
2. When should I begin the application process?
Most families begin the application process in the fall prior to the year their child is entering school. Call the admissions office at any time to request materials and to arrange a visit so you can get to know who we are and what we do.
3. What is the deadline for applying?
We begin reviewing applications in January and the first group of acceptances are notified mid-February. Subsequent applications are considered on a space-available basis. Exact deadlines vary from year to year; please call the Admissions Office for details.
4. What will my child's visit be like?
Children entering Nursery visit in the spring, and will spend an hour in an early childhood classroom with a few other children who are applying. Your child will simply play, and we use the hour to begin to get to know him or her.
Children entering Pre-K and Kindergarten spend a morning with their peers, and participate in everything the class is doing that day. Teachers will observe your child and spend some one-on-one time to assess certain skills if necessary.
Children entering Grades One through Five spend a full day in the class of their peers, participating in as much as possible, recognizing that each child is at a different point in their own educational experience at their current setting. At some point during the day, the Director of Admissions will invite your child to her office for a brief, friendly conversation.
5. When should I apply for Tuition Assistance?
Tuition Assistance is a tuition reduction program, and is available to students who qualify in Kindergarten and above. Applications are available in October for the following year. For new families, Tuition Assistance is awarded on a first come, first served basis, so it is best to apply the same time you apply for admission.
6. Our family is not Quaker. Will my child feel comfortable in a Quaker school?
Yes! Quakers embrace families from all backgrounds. We invite you to share your holidays and customs with your child's teacher - the class will help you celebrate! For more information about what it means to be a Quaker school, click here.
7. What is your class size?
Nursery fills at 12, and Pre-K at 16, each with a full time teacher and assistant. Our physical space in Pre-K can accommodate a larger group if need be. In that case, additional staff is added to keep the child-teacher ratio low. Grades K-5 close at 16. Kindergarten also has an assistant teacher.
8. Where do WFS graduates go?
For a list, click here.
9. During what hours does the school operate?
The regular school day is from 8:30 to 2:40. Nursery and PreK also offer half day sessions. Our Extended Day program operates from 7am to 8:30am, and from 2:40pm to 6pm.
10. Can I get transportation for my child?
The school district in which you reside provides free transportation during regular school hours (not Extended Day hours) to children starting in Kindergarten, within a 15 mile radius to WFS. Deadlines for signing up apply, normally April 1st.
11. Do you use standardized tests?
ERB's are administered to Third through Fifth grade students in May. A standardized test is any examination that is administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner and simply provides a snapshot into a child's learning. Westbury Friends believes that the assessment that occurs each day in the classrooms is the most valuable and accurate information to be found regarding ways in which teachers and parents can determine student's areas of strength and difficulty. ERB's are administered and scores reviewed to gain useful information about the class and the program as a whole. The results are helpful for faculty and administration to identify curricular areas that need revision or enhancement.
12. What is your lunch program like?
Children bring their own lunch each day. On Fridays, the PTC (Parent Teacher Council) serves an optional hot lunch for a small charge. Please note that we are a "nut free" school.
13. Do you have a tuition payment plan?
Yes. You can pay in full, in two installments, or ten monthly payments. In order to avoid interest fees, you must pay in full by July 1st of the summer before school begins.
14. Do you offer care during school holidays?
Vacation camps for Westbury Friends School students are offered during the Holiday, Winter and Spring Recess if there is adequate interest from our parents.
