Rebeca Lugo
Spanish Teacher
I was born in Valencia, Venezuela and have been living in New York for the past eight years. My formal education took place in Venezuela at the Colegio Universitario de Psicopedagogía, where I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in special education. A year before graduating I had the opportunity to complete a one-year internship working with kids suffering from mental retardation; an outstanding experience that enhanced my professional career. Once I completed my degree, I started teaching at IDEA, a pre-school and kindergarten in Venezuela, where I worked for about four years.
In 2001 I made the decision to move to New York to further my education. While completing my English as a Second Language studies, I continued to follow my passion for kids and in 2002 I decided that teaching Spanish in the U.S. would provide young kids with the opportunity to learn a new language that will provide them with new opportunities in the future. Therefore, I started working as a Pre-K and Kindergarten Spanish Teacher at several schools, Spanish All Year Center and Loving and Learning Educational Childcare, where I am still working. Simultaneously, during 2003 and 2007 I have taught at the Spanish Immersion Workshop the "Mommy and me" classes, First Class School, TLC Day Care Center and Merokee Day School.
As part of my professional development, I attended the "Sixth Annual Trevor Day School Conference," where I learned how to integrate thematic planning for the early language curriculum. In 2005 as a member of the speaking panel, I presented a curriculum for Pre-K and Kindergarten for the languages acquisition in Spanish at the "Northeast Conference for Teachers of Foreign Languages."
Being a Spanish teacher to kids of different cultural backgrounds at The Spanish All Year Center for the past six years has been an enriching and gratifying experience. I feel very proud of my Latin roots and I am happy to be able to help children develop their Spanish speaking skills. Furthermore, I enjoy sharing with my students the beauty and diversity of the Latin American culture.
