"We Get By With a Lot of Help From Our Friends"
MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS to WESTBURY FRIENDS SCHOOL
The Powell Endowment Fund
In 1999 Mr. Richard Powell of Fresno, California proposed the Powell Endowment Fund for Westbury Friends School. Mr. Powell, and his mother Louise had been steady and generous supporters of Westbury Friends School for many years and the Powell family was involved in the founding of the school in 1957. As stated in Westbury Friends School; The First Forty Years 1957-1997 by Noel Palmer; George Powell served on the Meeting Building and Grounds Committee and the Finance Committee. Louise Powell served on the School Committee.
Richard Powell offered to create a fund that carried on his family's name and that received contributions from his family and others. Upon the approval of the Board of Managers an account was set up with Mr. Powell's California firm in the name of Westbury Friends School into which stocks and gifts are regularly transferred as endowment gifts to the School.
Since December 2001 the donations from the Powell family to fund their endowment totaled in excess of $270,000. Revenues generated from the Powell Endowment Fund have been received in the amount of $30,000. It has funded student scholarships, supported the complete revision of the Westbury Friends School website, the first face of any school today and provided funds for many enrichment activities for our students that help support and expand their core curriculum. During the 2008-09 academic year alone, the Powell Endowment Fund gave financial support to the:
• Nursery - Second Grade trip to the Phipps orchard for apple picking, a Westbury Friends School tradition
• K-5 Theatre Trip to Nassau Community College
• K-5 Trip to Nassau County Art Museum to view
our "Embracing Our Differences" banner, created by our
students and recognized as an award winning art piece
• Feast Among Friends Grandparents/Friends Day
• Underground Railroad Teaching Partnership with SUNY Old
Westbury to develop a Quaker and Underground Railroad
curriculum
• Quakerism In The Classroom faculty professional
development
• Spanish classes offered to K, 1, and 2 in addition to
the already existing 3, 4 and 5 program
• Latin American & Caribbean Theme Week
• Caumsett Overnight scholarship for two students
• Annual Beach Trip for N-5, another long-standing
Westbury Friends School tradition
• Community Service trips to support the goals of other
non-profit groups focusing on the needs of children
• Faculty for their ongoing efforts to develop themselves
professionally through conferences, seminars, course
work and workshops
The Powell Endowment Fund helps to provide Westbury Friends students and faculty with amazingly rich and sound educational opportunities that expand the curriculum and professional development each year. This is indeed "scholarship" in its truest sense, reaching all. One can only imagine what else is possible in the name of the Powell Endowment Fund. It is important that the entire Westbury Friends School community recognize the ongoing benefits provided by financial support from the Powell Endowment Fund.
Additional Gifts from the Powell Family

Phipps Family Foundation
For many years, Westbury Friends has been the recipient of the significant generosity of Mary Phipps and the Phipps Family Foundation, long time friends and Old Westbury neighbors of the school. The Phipps Family Foundation and Mrs. Phipps have donated well over $100,000in support of student scholarships, program development and a host of many other endeavors. Westbury Friends School holds dear the relationship with Mary Phipps and the Phipps Family Foundation, true friends and benefactors.
Leon A. Rushmore, Jr. " Building Friends for the Future"
A true visionary, with remarkable hope and determination, Leon Rushmore played a pivotal role in building Westbury Friends School. His real gift was an ability to move groups with diverse interests to a common goal using a wonderful blend of verbal and written communication skills. During his eight year involvement in Westbury Friends School, Leon Rushmore was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the school's "Building Friends for the Future" campaign, which included the addition of five new classrooms and the development of the Library Media Center.
Leon Rushmore Scholarship Fund
The Leon Rushmore Scholarship Fund is in honor of Leon A. Rushmore, Jr., (1901-2001). The Roslyn Savings Foundation Grant has recently designated $4000 to Westbury Friends for the 2009-2010 to be used for either scholarship and/or program development and enrichment.
Bears 4 Kids Program, The Sprung Foundation
During the 2008-09 academic year Westbury Friends School partnered with The Sprung Foundation based in NYC. One of the goals of the Foundation is to bring joy to those who are alone, ill, in the hospital, confined to bed, or terminally ill. Mr. Joseph Sprung does this through his *BEARS 4 KIDS *Program and simply asks that our students deliver teddy bears, wearing a t-shirt with the WFS logo on it to anyone who may fall into the above categories, young or old. In turn, Mr. Sprung donated $5000 to Westbury Friends School.
Mr. Sprung sent 200 teddy bears to Westbury Friends School; one for each of our students to give away to a person as described above and one for each of our students to keep. By the end of the school year in June, the WFS student body completed the delivery of 100 bears to people who benefited greatly from the love and joy the bear provided. The Sprung Foundation will once again partner with Westbury Friends School during the 2009-10 academic year.
The Charity Society
The Charity Society, established by local Quakers in 1794 to support the education of African American children, has, since the 1970's provided funds annually to Westbury Friends School specifically for scholarships to support our diverse student population. For the 2009-10 year The Charity Society has decided to earmark their contribution to Westbury Friends toward the development of a Quaker/Underground Railroad Curriculum undertaken by the school.

Many supporters have chosen to contribute in this way, enjoying not only the sport and the food, but the collegiality as well. Last year, for those who wished to participate in the event but not the sports, we also offered at the facility an enlightening panel discussion featuring John Gambling from WOR radio. We hope to see you at our next outing. It is truly a joyous day!
